What is naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a complete system of health care that specialises in disease prevention using both scientific and traditional evidence in patient practice.
Naturopathic medicine utilises a variety of therapeutic techniques and substances that encourage a persons inherent ability to heal themselves.
Naturopathic medicine recognises the intelligent design and order in both ourselves and in the natural world and the innate ability for our body to heal itself if given the correct conditions to do so.
Naturopathic medicine utilises a variety of different tools to help a patient reclaim their health, such as dietary and nutritional advice, herbal medicine, flower essence therapy, appropriate rest and relaxation techniques, clean water and detoxing our environment (including cleaning and skin products) to reduce unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals and toxins.
Six Foundational Naturopathic Principles
vis medicatrix naturae . the healing power of nature
Naturopathic medicine recognises each individuals innate self healing ability that is designed with ordered intelligence.
Naturopathic practitioners aim to identify and remove obstacles to healing and to facilitate and augment the self healing processes.
tolle causum . identify and treat the cause
The naturopathic practitioner will seek to get to the underlying root cause/s of illness and treat accordingly rather than simply suppressing the symptoms.
primum non nocere . first do no harm
Naturopaths utilise methods and medicinal substances that aim to minimise the risk of harmful side effects, using the least force necessary to diagnose and treat. Naturopaths avoid where possible the harmful suppression of symptoms and instead acknowledge, respect and work along with the individuals own innate self healing processes.
docere . doctor as teacher
Education for the patient is a pivotal part of the naturopathic consultation. The naturopathic practitioner will highlight the vital importance of self-responsibility when it comes to each individuals path to recovery.
tolle totum . treat the whole person
Naturopathic practitioners recognise that individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, spiritual, social and environmental factors all play a role in an individuals overall health and well being. Therefore the naturopath will take all things into account when developing a personalised treatment plan.
preventare . prevention
Naturopathic practitioners highlight the importance of disease prevention by assessing risk factors, genetic factors and susceptibility to disease and developing appropriate interventions.
